Avocado Cheesecake Pie?

I came across a recipe for an avocado pie or cheesecake to be more specific. My first thought was not a positive one. The thought of an avocado cheesecake? What? Don't mess with my cheesecake! That is my "Mickey Mantle" of desserts, a confectionery delight. I do not even approve of the lemon addition or fruit toppings, I am a New York style puritan. So, with the thought of a fruit (yes it is a fruit, not a vegetable) that's associated with the popular Mayan dip delicacy known as guacamole, it was definitely not a pleasant first impression. However, the picture on the recipe looked a lot like a key lime pie and it changed my idea of a pie with cilantro, tomato and a jalapeno to a "maybe its not as bad as I imagined" pie. With Thanksgiving on the immediate horizon, and with only one way to find out, I thought I would take the challenge and make my Guacamole, no sorry, my avocado pie.

Filling ingredients:
3 Avocados
1 8oz package of cream cheese
1 14oz can sweetened condensed milk
1 lime
1 lemon (optional)
pinch of salt

Crust:
5 Tbsp melted butter
1.5 c graham craker crumbs
1 Tbsp granulated sugar
(Mix graham cracker, sugar in a bowl. press mixture into a prepared pan.
Bake @ 350 deg until golden brown. Cool completely on rack)
or; use a ready made graham cracker pie crust

Gather the ingredients, Halve and pit the avocados, scoop out the flesh and chop.
Mix the avocado and cream cheese in a bowl with a mixer on medium until smooth. Then add the condensed milk, lime juice and salt. Beat until fluffy, scraping the bowl as needed.
Pour the filling into the crust, cover and chill at least 4 hours.
Serve with whipped cream

The pie was served at Thanksgiving with some good reviews, even in the midst of tough competition. The Pumpkin and Pecan pies (the thanksgiving heavyweights) almost proved too much for the new kids ego. With some mediocre sales techniques and peaked curiosity, the pie was eaten.

As for my review, the ease of the assembly was simple. The taste was unique, it has a mild avocado taste that is slightly masked by the lime. In fact it reminded me of a key lime pie with that bit of a refreshing taste. It was definitely worth the try, even if it was to just satisfy the curiosity factor. However, as I was eating a slice the thought occured to me that I need to make it again with some celantro and chile peppers!

Aloha!
